Yarns etc.

Yarns etc.

This week I've finally added the images from the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum to the website. A big thank you to Huw at the Herbert for the use of the photographs.

Also this week I've ordered some yarns, a selection of different colours, roughly based on my photographs of the ribbon collections. As there are so many possible colours to use as inspiration, I decided to get a small amount of lots of different colours. I also want to use mainly silk yarn as the original ribbons are made of silk, however silk can be quite expensive and I've got a limited budget, so my first order was fairly modest.

This week I finally managed to finish my artist's biography statement for Nuneaton Art Gallery. It took a lot of editing but I finally got it to 250 words that I felt ok with sending. I also needed an image to send to them to represent the project, this was made more difficult because I haven't actually produced any work to photograph yet! I thought an image of some work in progress that showed the loom would be the best option. I did a quick bit of weaving including pieces of ribbon and paper and set up a photograph, it took me several attempts to come up with something I was happy with. I decided it would be good to include the project logo if possible, so I printed it small and attached it to a label. I had some difficulty then getting the image to a good enough standard for printing, I will admit to having some help with getting the image to it's final version.

This week I have been working on an artist's biography statement for the exhibition. It's required for next week so I've got to get to work on it. After struggling to write 250 words I've now written 350 and need to lose 100. I also need to choose an image to represent the project in the exhibition guide, I've got an idea so hopefully that will work out. I'm still working on my sketchbook, organising and adding images which involves lots of cutting out and gluing!

This week I have been working on some ideas in my sketchbook. I printed out a lot of my photos from my visits to the ribbon collections at Nuneaton and the Herbert. Today I have been trying to organise the images into sections that make sense and could lead into ideas for the exhibition. I'm trying to group things together into themes.

This is my first blog for this project now that the website is finally ready to go live. It's taken me longer to put together all the information and text than I thought! But everything's about ready now.

The site at this stage shows what I have done so far, the gallery contains photographs of collections I've visited at Nuneaton Art Gallery and Museum will soon show images from the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum collection in Coventry. The research section contains a summary of my contextual research into the history of Ribbon weaving in the area.

The next stage for me is to start putting together some ideas from this research for work for the exhibition.

I'd also  like to thank Jim and Graeme for making me this fantastic site and for all of their help with technical stuff when I don't understand how things work.
